You've found the perfect new garage door you want on your home, you call your local Overhead Door distributor and they ask what size your garage door is. Now what?

Typically when your asking for pricing on a new garage door one of the first things they will ask you is, "what's the size of your door"?

It's pretty simple to measure your door. For the height you'll measure from the top to bottom and you'll measure from one end of the actual door to the other side for the width. Having the measurements of your door before you call for a quote is important. Door sizes vary in price so being able to provide the dimensions will help you get a quote faster.

Standard garage door heights

Most garage doors are offered in two different heights. The standard heights for garage doors are 7 feet and 8 feet tall. This of course would be measuring from the top to the bottom of the actual door. This doesn't include any tracks or other components of your garage door system, just the door itself.

Standard garage door widths

Garage door widths will vary depending on the type of garage door you have. There are single car doors and double car doors. The most common widths for single car garage doors are 8 ft. or 9 ft. For double car doors the widths are typically 16 ft. or 18 ft. wide.

The common garage door dimensions for single doors are:

  • 8 ft. wide by 7 ft. high
  • 9 ft. wide by 7 ft. high
  • 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. high

The most common garage door dimensions for double car garage doors are:
